I'm a ghostwriter and author coach, specializing in business books for entrepreneurs and thought leaders. The authors I work with have the experience, the expertise, the stories--all the ingredients they need to write a book that changes lives, cements their expert status, and exponentiates their reach. What they lack is time and the skill of book-writing. That's where I come in.

I have over a decade of experience writing books. I've been writing fiction since 2011; I bring this fiction writer’s approach to my work with authors. What's the story? What details will make this 'stick' in the reader's brain? How will I keep the reader turning pages? Those are the questions I'm asking myself as I hear you, the author, tell your experiences. I'm never judging; I'm thinking from a storytelling, brand-building perspective.

I've got a special talent for finding the sweet spot between "head and heart." I work in close collaboration with authors to define their grand visions and dreams for the books; then, we find a pragmatic route to bring that dream to fruition.

Location: Dallas, TX

Specialties: Thought leadership, business books, business leadership, personal development, spirituality, humor

Year of Experience: 10 +

Magazines & Podcasts: I've ghostwritten and edited for major business publications such as Forbes and Harvard Business Review; my bylined work has appeared in places like Freelancer FAQ's, Forge, and Literary Traveler. I've also been a guest on many podcasts including the Resolve podcast with Carly Tizzano (ep. 48), the Highly Sensitive Soul podcast (ep. 33), and the & Then Write podcast (ep. 29).

Books: I've ghostwritten for authors who have published with major presses, business presses, and all in between. I've also coached authors who have written brand-building books. I don't talk about author projects, but you can go to my website (jenniferlockewrites.com) to see testimonials from authors I've worked with in various capacities.

My Story

Featured in GQ UK Magazine and Courier's 100 Ways to Make a Living

Memoirs are about journeys, whether they be personal, professional, or somewhere in between. We all start out in one place in life and end up somewhere else. I grew up in America in a small town in northern New York near the Canadian border renting horror and sci-fi films from my local video store during the long, cold winters. After working in local TV Production at WSTM in Syracuse, I headed west where I worked for 15 years in Los Angeles in the film and television industry in various roles at small production companies before finally settling at 20th Century Fox Broadcasting. I always had one foot in the writing world on the side but, it wasn’t until I finished my Master's Degree in London that I realized how important cultural understanding and historical research is to the writing process. I completed my dissertation on the films of Kiyoshi Kurosawa in 2012 and, after a brief stint back in Live TV operations, began working as a writer of memoirs in late 2016. I became a British citizen in 2018 and now consider the UK my home where I enjoy the vibrant punk music scene.

Now with 5 years and more than 40 projects under my belt, my most valuable skill is adaptability. In my own essays, film, and book reviews, I strive to develop my own literary style. When approaching ghost and editorial projects, I research the background of the subject and write in the voice of the client. For editing projects and re-writes, I always consider the author's original intent and audience. I've worked with people from all walks of life ranging in age from 27 to 92 to help them create books both for private limited runs and commercial publication.

Bio

A bold and innovative writer who has written thirteen nonfiction books and two novels, edited both fiction and nonfiction, and shepherded books to publication with traditional publishers, hybrid, and self-publishers. My fiction has won national awards for creativity and excellence, and my ghostwritten memoirs have become bestsellers. I’ve demonstrated a mastery over difficult topics. Among others I’ve written a biography of a physicist, a therapy book on overcoming addiction, a physician’s story of discovering and using a potent nutrient, an adventure memoir, and a memoir recreating an exciting and tense courtroom drama where the author wins a unanimous victory over a powerful corporate employer.

I make difficult and challenging subjects easy to understand and compelling to read by marrying the material to a relevant story arc.

After an exhaustive study of the art of storytelling, I applied the craft of the story arc to the art of the memoir. The memoir itself is a malleable genre fit for experimentation and adaptation to anyone’s life experiences. Contemporary story arcs have been deeply influenced by the Hero’s Journey popularly written about by Joseph Campbell in “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.” Campbell’s work has been adapted to almost every form of contemporary movies and books.

While the word “hero” may sound pretentious and irrelevant because of its ancient roots, in our democratic age modern storytellers have reinvented the hero as any person who has overcome significant obstacles to achieve unexpected life goals and satisfaction. Memoirs in the past were dominated by “great men” stories of their accomplishments. This is no longer true. Entrepreneurs fiddling in their garages with a new sole for running shoes, moms selling vintage clothing online, anyone with an idea and passion to build something, who persevere and overcome formidable obstacles to achieve remarkable success are today’s heroes. Immigrants with few resources who build productive and affluent futures for themselves and their families are celebrated in books and films. Individuals overcoming family dysfunction, abuse in any form, disabilities, race and ethnic prejudice to achieve the American Dream, are examples of popular stories. Published works are too numerous to mention, but I have a long list of excellent examples on my website, www.johndesimone.com

I’ve even adapted a corporate history, The C & D Story, to the story arc format, chronicling the rise of an energetic and ambitious entrepreneur who started with one product and a few thousand dollars and by continually reinventing the product and processes, built a billion-dollar company over thirty years. People are transformed by their experiences, and so are companies run by creative individuals who are driven to succeed.

The story arc, artfully used, in its various forms (there are different forms of the story arc: positive, negative, static, as well as personality and character types) is the key to telling your story, any story, in your voice, your way, to reach an audience waiting to participate vicariously in your success. Stories like this are the seeds of inspiration for the next generation.

I am a business author and ghostwriter.

I have five books about business and leadership published under my own name. I have also co-authored four books with leading management consultant Dr Mark Powell on organisational change and our concept of Performance Thinking, exploring what business can learn from the performing arts. These books have been variously translated into Chinese, Russian, Thai, Indonesian and Korean.

Most of my ghostwriting work is also around business and leadership—though I have also written books on how to buy private land for property development and on the use of venture capital techniques to drive innovation in American politics. I’m happy to take on any non-fiction project.

I have written the first volume of the autobiography of a leading businessman and adventurer, to be published in late 2022, and am currently working on the second volume.

I write a great deal of shortform work, typically in the form of op eds, blogs and articles to promote my own or my clients’ work.

My previous experience was in national newspapers and magazines. I was the publisher of BBC Worldwide’s BBC Music Magazine and the launch publisher of BBC History Magazine.

Hi, I’m Jonathan and I help people tell their stories, so here’s a brief version of mine. After growing up in the Washington, DC area, going on a church mission to Japan for two years, and later getting a Master’s in English at the University of Utah, I wound up working as a contract technical writer back home in the DC area. After working in that career for a little over 15 years, I knew I needed a change, so I moved back to Utah and started a small consulting firm. The work went well and I made good money, but after a few years, I found that I missed writing. One morning as I was attending a weekly business networking meeting, a visitor stood up and told everyone that he was a ghostwriter and got paid to write books for other people. Suddenly, a light went off in my head. Writing for others in one form or another was something I had been doing for years, even in college as a writing tutor and student newspaper editor, so why not make it my business? I soon got back into writing, this time as a ghostwriter, and I haven’t looked back. As a ghostwriter, I specialize in memoirs and self-help/motivational books. I write memoirs because I love helping people tell their stories, especially stories where the author triumphs over tragedy and adversity. Writing memoirs is great too because it seems that each client I help becomes a friend. I write self-help and motivational books because I grew up reading a ton of self-help and motivational books, and I have to think they’ve positively influenced my life. I also write self-help books because I love helping people improve their life. Plus, my clients who hire me to help them write self-help books are some of the best people I’ve ever met. So, here’s the deal. If you want to write your memoir or a self-help book and you want to make sure it’s easy-to-read and well-written, I’m your ghostwriter. You’ll like what I can do for you. Location: Ogden, Utah Specialties: Memoirs and Self-help Years of Experience: 23 Memberships: Association of Ghostwriters Books: A few of the books I’ve recently written or edited:

  • Freedom Keeper: the Life of Zoltan Toth by Zoltan Toth (co-author)
  • Living with DM: My Family’s Story, by Ann Woodbury (co-author)
  • Soldier and Spouse and Their Traveling House, by Matthew Alan House (co-wrote and edited)
  • Your Breakaway Life: The Secret to Achieving Lifelong Success, by Paul R. Quist (co-wrote and edited)
  • Enthusiastic YOU! Rediscover Your Passion & Energy: Tools For Success in Your Daily Life by Joshua M. Evans (edited only)

  • Book on success (ghostwrote)

During my freshman year of college as an English Lit major, I decided that ghost writing was supposed to be a side project in 2017. Instead, it turned into a passion that grew into something so much larger than I could have ever imagined! Since then, I've been actively working to progress in my writing and editing skills to be the best ghostwriter I can be for my clients. I'm always looking for new ways to write different types of scenes, the best editing tips and tricks, and how I can best manage my time so that I can hit those deadline but give my clients the best quality work at the same time. I've since earned my Bachelor's Degree in Education in the field of English Literature in May of 2023 from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I was also recently able to quit my 9-5 to dedicate all my time to outlining, drafting, and editing books for my clients who I owe the biggest thanks to because without them, I wouldn't be writing this very post! I'm excited to join the Association of Ghostwriters because let's be honest, writing is a very isolated activity most of the time. I'm excited to find like minded writers who understand the ins and outs of this profession, who I can learn and grow with, and become a better writer altogether. I love writing anything from YA Fantasy, to New Adult Contemporary Fiction, to Mysteries, to Thrillers. As long as there's an outline to guide the writing and a deadline to keep me on track, I'll jump into the project and give it all I can. I know what it's like to hold my own finished manuscript in my hands and how INCREDIBLE it feels. I know that not everyone can say the same due to whatever reason but that doesn't mean they can't experience that magical feeling. I love being able to write the story that's been brewing in someone's mind for years and seeing their faces when they have the first draft in their hands. That has to be one of my favorite things about being a ghostwriter! I'm so excited to meet new clients and fellows ghosts!

I am a traditionally published author (Radically Normal, Harvest House) and full-time ghostwriter with over a dozen books under my belt. Prior to that, I was a pastor for fourteen years, followed by five as a bartender. In between the two, my family and I traveled around America for eight months in a minivan. We saw 40 states, two provinces, and Tijuana.

I am a ghostwriter with more than fifteen years of experience in memoir and nonfiction, specializing in helping high-profile professionals, including doctors, athletes, entrepreneurs, and celebrities, turn their unique stories into compelling books. I have written four of my own books, ghostwritten more than seventy books, and worked with hundreds of authors.

At the most basic level, I work with thought leaders and industry experts who want to write a book. My gift is capturing their genius on the page, and I understand exactly where they are in their writing process so we can bring out the best in them.

When we’re done, authors have a professionally published book that opens new doors and elevates their business in even more ways than they hoped for.

But what also occurs is they step into their identity as an author.

It’s the most satisfying part of the whole process.

I also have a thriving practice coaching other ghostwriters, editors, and book designers to create lasting change and build a business they love.

In my 19 years as a freelance writer, I’ve strived to be versatile. In addition to ghostwriting books, I’ve done writing projects for large corporations, small businesses and PR agencies, as well as medical research organizations, physician practices and nonprofits.

Writing clearly and effectively—in the voice of my client—is always an interesting challenge. Collaborating with a client, working hard on a piece of writing, and knowing that they’re pleased with the final result is very satisfying.

I have a bachelor’s degree in English from Ursinus College and a master’s degree in Organizational Dynamics (the study of how organizations function at their best) from the University of Pennsylvania.

I live near Philadelphia with my wife and son. In my spare time you’ll find me exercising, reading, listening to old jazz music, cheering on the Philly sports teams and struggling to finish the New York Times crossword puzzle.

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Years of ghostwriting experience: 19

Specialties: Memoir, business books, articles and business documents. Also, I have years of experience in line editing for nonfiction books.

Ghostwritten books: Keep the Goal in Sight (memoir); The Spirit of Philanthropy: Fundraising for a Better World; The Empowerment Project: Grow Your People, Grow Your Business

Share Your Brilliance with Those Who Matter Most

Since you’re here looking for a writer, you probably have ideas, expertise, data or stories that you want to share. Get them out of your head, and give them life beyond your scribbles, docs and spreadsheets. I can help distill your brilliance down to its essence, so you can share the real you with those who matter most.

Business, science, technology or policy

Since 1996, I’ve been ghostwriting for experts across a range of industries: public policy, urban resilience, transportation, healthcare, energy, leadership development, and more.

Expertise in sustainability

With a Harvard master’s in sustainability and environmental management, I’m especially drawn to subjects related to making cities livable and neighborhoods walkable.

Knack for story-puzzling

I specialize in taking something complex and making it clear and compelling, whether piecing together 100+ hours of interview transcripts, or turning my city’s municipal code into haiku for fun.

Accepting projects for

  • Books
  • Reports
  • Research proposals
  • Thought leadership content

Eager to brainstorm unique ways to share your expertise

Some people need traditional thought leadership pieces like articles or presentations. I’ve also used creative storytelling tools, like ArcGIS StoryMaps, or even designed my own tools to find fun ways to share what you know.

Favorite recent projects

  • Academic book (traditionally published) for two co-authors (a university president and a university faculty member), combining their multiple years of experience with their recent research into a book that takes a new approach to the challenges of professional relationships.
  • Business leadership book (self-published by best-selling author) focused on the value of individuality. I also adapted the book content into a full online training curriculum, and created an assessment tool so people can see if they’re suppressing individuality in the way they lead people.
  • Communications strategy for a Los Angeles-based public policy think tank, to change the way they communicate with their audiences of policymakers, civic leaders and residents. Analyzed raw research data about bus service in LA and turned it into a compelling report using ArcGIS StoryMaps. Translated in-depth reports into easily digestible formats, broadening the reach and impact of their research and analysis.

Testimonials

Creating content that authentically represents you:

“Kim is the most talented writer I’ve ever worked with in my career. Her unique ability to capture my thoughts and intentions, then translate them into highly compelling content is masterful. Kim invests time in understanding who you are as an individual, ensuring that the content she produces authentically represents your values and core beliefs. Having collaborated for nearly a decade, I can confidently say that no project is too complex for Kim; she approaches each challenge with enthusiasm and excellence."

—Glenn Llopis, entrepreneur and founder of business strategy consulting firm GLLG

Elevating your messaging to a new level:

"When I met Kim, it was like hitting the jackpot. I was struggling to convey our big ideas and dense research into compelling messages for our public policy advocacy regarding Los Angeles’ streets and sidewalks. Kim's expertise has been transformative. Over the past two years, she's consistently elevated our work with her insightful thoughts, meticulous edits, and impactful rewrites. Beyond her role as a powerful communications strategist, Kim is a compassionate and supportive collaborator, guiding us through every step of the process. Working with her has been an incredible gift."

—Jessica Meaney, executive director of Investing in Place

Designing and conducting original research:

“A superb thesis, with an impressive combination of GIS modeling, ground-trotting fieldwork and statistical analysis!”

—Dr. Mark Leighton, Harvard University, director of sustainability program

Translating complexity – I won a prize from Harvard for the quality of my research and for:

“Writing skill that makes all sections of the thesis interesting and easily understandable; complex GIS and 3D modeling concepts are elucidated in terms anyone can digest.”

—Jeff Blossom, Harvard University Center for Geographic Analysis
