Member Spotlight: Wendy Scheuring
How did you land your first book ghostwriting project?
Sixteen years ago, I placed an ad in my HOA newsletter for writing assistance and tutoring. An elderly neighbor, a WWII Navy pilot, called and asked me to help him write his life story. His wife had passed away and he wanted to keep their memories alive. I had never written a book before, but I had years of writing and language experience, having been a college writing teacher for nearly 20 years, an editor, a journalist, a business writer, a dyslexic reading specialist, and I was doing a lot of writing on my own. I decided to take on the challenge and learn more about long-form writing. After that, more book projects came my way, and I’m still helping people write their books to this day as a ghostwriter, book doctor, editor, and coach/mentor.
What is your favorite type of project or client?
People who have interesting ideas that pique my curiosity and that I can learn from are ideal clients. I enjoy working with authors who truly want to help their readers with their message. Many tell me, “If I can just help one person.”
What’s your favorite question to ask clients during an interview?
I listen, become engaged, and really enjoy digging deeper with follow-up questions to bring their stories to light.
What are the best parts of this career?
I love the flexibility and that I get to do what I love for a living.
What’s one thing clients might be surprised to know about you?
I’m an empath who feels deeply, relies upon intuition and discernment, and lives, eats, breathes, and loves writing. I am also a linguist who loves the nuances of language. I have studied many languages, including ones that are no longer spoken. The written word intrigues me and I bring that intrigue to the page. I also homeschooled all three of my children (K-12), relearning everything I was taught as a child from a more mature perspective alongside them. It was an enlightening experience to help my kids learn to discover and develop their own strengths and interests at their own pace.
