Member Spotlight: Kristin Clark
How did you land your first book ghostwriting project?
I sort of fell into it, actually. I had done quite a bit of ghostwriting, but it was all focused on long-form articles, social media posts, and so on. A client I had been working with for years told me he needed a ghostwriter to write his book. He and I really enjoyed working together, and I had already written two books of my own, so when he asked me if I’d take a stab at it, I agreed. It was a phenomenal experience; I had a blast and learned a lot, and he was incredibly pleased at the outcome. Since then, I’ve never looked back!
What is your favorite type of project or client?
I love working on projects that are focused on making the world a better place. I know that sounds grandiose, but really, it comes down to helping people have better, happier, easier lives. That could include books that help entrepreneurs succeed at business, guide parents in doing a better job raising their children, or support regular people as they work toward better physical and mental health. Basically, as long as it’s helping, I’m all for it.
What’s your favorite question to ask clients during an interview?
At the end of every call, I always ask my clients, “Is there anything else that you want to say that we haven’t covered yet?” It’s such a simple question, but over and over, I find it yields the most gold of the whole conversation. Almost inevitably, people say, “No, I think we’ve covered everything. I just think…” and then they’ll launch into something amazing that they didn’t share earlier and that I probably wouldn’t have been able to get out of them any other way. It blows my mind every time.
What are the best parts of this career?
Being a ghostwriter has given me the opportunity to meet incredible people I never would have been able to connect with otherwise. The wisdom that people have shared with me as I’m writing their books has directly impacted my own life. I’ve had the good fortune to work with people at the top of a wide range of industries, and learning from them is something that makes me smile every single day.
What’s one thing clients might be surprised to know about you?
I’m an aspiring homesteader and farmer. My husband and I live in Western North Carolina, and we keep bees and chickens. We also have apple trees, elderberry bushes, blueberry bushes, and comfrey. I’m getting ready to plant potatoes and lettuce, too!
