Member Spotlight: Dan Good

How did you land your first book ghostwriting project?
I got into book ghostwriting by way of journalism in 2019. After spending a decade in NYC media, and with a young son at home, I was burned out and looking to explore a career path with more flexibility.
Ghostwriting spoke to me.
At first, without any book experience, I applied to various ghostwriting companies and started fielding pitches. I landed my first ghostwriting projects through agencies but have since been working independently.
At this point I’ve written or ghostwritten more than 40 books, four of which have become national bestsellers.
I love meeting with authors and guiding them on their way!
What is your favorite type of project or client?
I value the chance to work on a wide range of nonfiction projects, including books about leadership, sports, business, self-growth, family and true crime.
My favorite projects push boundaries and make me think.
That was the case with a biography I wrote about baseball star Ken Caminiti, Playing Through the Pain (Abrams Press, 2022), that received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and was nominated for a CASEY Award as one of the year’s best baseball books.
My favorite clients are curious and have done a lot of self-work. They bring their best to the project and don’t hold back. They are interested in getting their story right and unlocking their story’s true power.
Writing a great book is hard! But that struggle is worth it. I appreciate clients who embrace that struggle and focus on the transformative aspects of book writing ahead of the outcomes that can result.
What’s your favorite question to ask clients during an interview?
What is your purpose for writing your book?
What are the best parts of this career?
I love learning new things and exploring people’s truths and getting one-on-one insights from truly interesting people. Being a ghostwriter means constantly learning.
What’s one thing clients might be surprised to know about you?
I enjoy watercolor painting. I took art classes in high school before life pulled me in different directions. I started painting again a few years ago and love how calming it can be.
