My first paid writing gig was in my mid-twenties. I wrote lyrics for a campaign to teach hard-to-reach school kids about STIs. (No, seriously). We actually laid the track as well, then they got two younger actors to come in and mime the parts. I got paid a nice amount, but the campaign never aired. And to think, I could have been the voice of HPV.

Since then, I’ve ghostwritten a couple of Amazon best-sellers and have become an award-winning scriptwriter and copywriter. But some things never change. My approach to writing is still rooted in song: Where’s the hook? Does the cadence make me nod my head? Would my 17-year-old self write this line on his bedroom door? Would the 25-year-old me tattoo it on his arm?

Every line matters, and in this AI-saturated world, where everyone sounds like the same punchable robot, how you say it matters more than ever.
