Mark Tatge
Bio
Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The New York Times, Dallas Morning News, The Denver Post
I have been writing all my life. Most my experience as a writer is in daily journalism where I have specialized in complex financial investigations and explanatory journalism. But the focus was always on the story — figuring out what the story was and then telling it in the most compelling way possible. I was fortunate to I have worked for some of the best editors in the nation during stints at Forbes Magazine, Forbes.com, The Wall Street Journal, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dallas Morning News, and The Denver Post
Working as a journalist taught me the importance of research. I became a skilled interviewer and I learned how to write quickly. Journalism also gave me great respect for factual accuracy and for examining the larger context when writing about both people and issues. I now look at everything from a perspective of how things fit together. “What is next? And why did this happen?” I constantly ask myself.
I carried what I learned as a journalist to academia, and then later, to my career as an author, ghostwriter and developmental editor. After leaving Forbes, I spent 10 years teaching college students how to break down complex subjects and make them interesting to read. This experience actually helped me as both an editor and a writer. It challenged me to think about the different obstacles writers face, and then come up with a solution. While teaching, I completed an MBA and a Ph.D. I still teach part-time at University of Iowa.
The people who I have worked with on books are often complimentary.
Here is what Robert Ditmore, retired director, president and chief operating officer at United Healthcare had to say about the biography I wrote with him:
“Mark Tatge ended up teaching me, a pure novice, the art and process of writing. It was much more involved than I thought it would be. He taught me how the book needed to capture the different audience segments — family, friends and business associates. As an 87-year-old guy who has had a lot of life experiences, telling these stories involved much more than just a chronology of events. It touched on relationships and concentrated on my life’s purpose which is centered around God and family. I am forever grateful to Mark for his help.”
Location: Chicago, IL
Specialties: My forte is business and economics. As the son of a research chemist, I never could understand my father. This taught me the importance of explaining technical subjects simply while make them interesting. I love to use humor to explain and tease my audience.
I have a broad background and am comfortable with writing about a wide range of subjects: entrepreneurs, explainers (how-to), personal finance & self-help, economics, true crime stories, prisons, corporate and political scandals.
Interests: My interests include writing memoirs, biographies and gee-whiz stories about how things work. I have the ability to write about just about anything — legal, technology and medicine, corporate history, financial markets. I simply love a good story, a gripping narrative and I am always hunting for stories that amaze and delight.
