My name is David R. Stokes. I have authored several highly-regarded works of fiction and nonfiction and two screenplays. My own latest book is about President John F. Kennedy’s GHOSTWRITER. It was published in June 2021 by Lyon’s Press/Rowman & Littlefield and titled, JFK’S GHOST: Kennedy, Sorensen, and the Making of Profiles in Courage. As a GHOSTWRITER, I specialize in Memoirs, Politics, History, Leadership, Business, & Faith/Inspiration. One of my own books, THE SHOOTING SALVATIONIST: J. Frank Norris and the Murder Trial that Captivated America (Steerforth/Penguin/Random House, 2011), a narrative non-fiction thriller set in the 1920s, became a Wall Street Journal best-seller. BOOKLIST, in a starred review, said: “The book is engagingly written, in an immediate, you-are-there style, and the story is as compelling and surprising as any Grisham thriller. Top of the line.” This book has recently been revised and enhanced (30,000 words of new material) and re-released as APPARENT DANGER: The Pastor of America’s First Megachurch and the Texas Murder Trial of the Decade in the 1920s and is under review as a potential television miniseries. My espionage novel, CAMELOT’S COUSIN: The Spy Who Betrayed Kennedy.  My original screenplay based on it has been optioned in Hollywood by actor Blair Underwood. JACK & DICK: When Kennedy Met Nixon describes the very first Kennedy-Nixon debate which took place in 1947, thirteen years before the two men ran against each other for the presidency in 1960. I recreate a conversation between the two future presidents that took place on an overnight train ride back to Washington, DC. I have also written a screenplay adaptation. JAKE & CLARA: Scandal, Politics, Hollywood, and Murder, is a dramatized, but factual account of a story that captivated America in 1921. A wealthy oilman who bankrolled much of Warren G. Harding’s successful run for the White House was shot and killed by his mistress before Harding could reward him with high office. My writing has also appeared in the following publications:

  • The Richard Nixon Foundation
  • The Cold War Museum/The Cold War Times
  • The Daily Caller
  • The Washington Post
  • The Albany Times Union
  • Townhall.com
  • The Jewish Press
  • History News Network
  • The Washington Times
  • Intelligencer: Journal of U.S. Intelligence Studies
  • American Thinker
  • Preaching Magazine

An ordained minister, I retired from pastoral work in 2019, having served as a senior minister for more than 40 years, leading congregations in Texas, Illinois, New York, and Virginia. I have also worked in broadcasting, including a year-long run as host of my own Sirius/XM weekly two-hour Sunday night show, “DAVID STOKES LIVE.” I have interviewed more than 100 influential thought leaders from around the country. In addition to my early education in theology, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in History and a Master’s in Political Science. Location: Washington, DC. My clients rock . . .

“Denise is a creative wordsmith. Her thoughtful interviews and beautifully written feature stories capture the attention of our readers. Denise is always ready for a new writing adventure and she never misses a deadline.”  Georgette McCulloch, Editor In Chief – OUR HOMES Media Group

“With just one read-through of my manuscript, Dee was able to tell me things about my novel that even I didn’t know. She noticed all of the issues with my story and characters that I missed, and she pointed them out to me in a way that made me understand why I miss them. After working with Dee, I knew that I had found not merely a skilled and dedicated editor, but the right editor, and more importantly, a true literary ally. Dee has an excellent eye for a story’s big picture. Her insights in this regard drove me to better focus on my story’s message and my main character’s motivations. These are critical details that an author can lose sight of while plowing through the literary trenches. Even after spending years toiling to perfect my manuscript, agonizing over every word, rewriting every syllable until my fingertips were numb and my eyes were strained to the point of fatigue, Dee still found a way to make me want to agonize over it all the more. This, I believe, is what an aspiring novelist should look for in an editor; a fellow disciple of the craft who knows how to make an obsessed writer want to turn up the dial on his obsession. Thanks to Dee, my dial now goes to eleven.”  Nick Romanoff, Author of The God Complex

“Denise was thorough and detailed in proofreading my typeset novel. She provided great communication throughout the process, and she is ever-patient with my writerly foibles and doubts, even when those affect our scheduled dates. She’s a wonderful asset to my writing team.” Talena Winters, author of The Undine’s Tear, Finding Heaven, and The Friday Night Date Dress

“Denise was able to guide me during each stage of the editing process, her attention to detail allowed me to completely trust her. She made the editing process such a joy and I would love to work with her again!”   Janessa Adams, author of Bloom

“Denise has been absolutely delightful to work with through the manuscript evaluation process. Her thorough yet concise feedback was so helpful to delve through my manuscript and identify spots that needed adjustments and she included specific steps to address those weak areas. She was gracious enough to speak with me on the phone to walk through certain aspects as well. Her expertise and support has been so helpful! I would recommend Denise’s services to my fellow writers and I will certainly look to Denise for her help for my next manuscript evaluation and editing needs!”   Sherry Norton, author of Midnight Streets and Baptism By Fire

“Thank you, Denise, for your time, talent, and expertise. You brought much to this publishing project I began years ago. It’s your ability to write with such imagery that’s bringing my book to its conclusion. Thank you for all your hard work.”   Robert Hunt, author of Why Me?

“I have hired several different independent editors and Denise is clearly superior to all of them. Her deeper insights, recommendations, evaluations, and knowledge in all facets of writing and publishing have been critical to advancing my goals as a writer. Not only do I have a professional working directly on my manuscripts, I feel I have a friend that is invested in seeing me succeed as a writer.”   Robert Norton, author of Curse Of The Titans and The Last Subscription

“Denise is a world-class editor. I am confident that any writer hiring her will be well served. She brought a level of passion and precision to my project that exceeded all expectations. Her ability to balance style considerations with technical polish was inspiring, and everything she suggested was in the spirit of working as a team to ensure the work was the best it could be. I am much happier with my book as a result of Denise’s help, and recommend her without hesitation.”  Mark H Fitzpatrick, Author of Made Of Stars

“Denise produces exceptional work. Not only is she amazingly talented but her commitment to the work exudes the moment you speak with her. Denise came highly recommended by my publisher for my developmental and copy editing needs. Being I was a first-time author, it was the utmost importance I hired an editor who would see the gems among the mess and point out areas I could improve. I not only trusted Denise with keeping the integrity of my message, but she met all our deadlines, and her attention to detail was outstanding. Denise’s guidance, patience, and natural editing skills were instrumental in making my book what it is today. Without a doubt, I will be hiring Denise for my next book, and I suggest any author looking for an exceptional editor call Denise.”   Michelle Pena, Author of The B.E.A.U.T.Y Within

“Denise is a dedicated editor who is committed to her profession. Throughout all of our projects together, she has been able to take on anything that has come across her desk. Denise can communicate to an author what is needed with their manuscripts and deliver a professional finished product. She is a value and if you are looking for someone that can work with you to get you to a finished manuscript, then look no further.”  Chrissy Hobbs, Owner of Indie Publishing Group

Here are what some of my clients have to say:

"Diana coached me on my first full-length book, and she was a dream to work with. She struck the perfect balance between being enthusiastically encouraging and offering constructive and helpful suggestions that made my book richer and better. I'm convinced I would not have finished the book without her expertise." Minette Norman, Author of The Boldly Inclusive Leader

"Diana is wonderful to work with. She is professional, personable, and meets every deadline. Our clients have had nothing but rave reviews of her work. I would not hesitate to recommend her!" Sara Kocek, Owner, Yellow Bird Editors

"Diana helped me, a first-time author, turn my rough manuscript into a polished memoir. She listened to my thoughts and ideas and then suggested the perfect way for me to structure my book. Her enthusiasm was contagious. Her help invaluable. Without her, this book would not exist."

Carmen Westberg, Author of Dear Jeff "I have enjoyed working with Diana over this past year. She can pull raw ideas from me, a reluctant writer, and turn them into polished, engaging stories. My experience has been nothing short of amazing."

Senator Thomas Mann, Jr., Author of Surveillance and The Call to Serve "I’m so grateful to have been introduced to Diana. Right from the start she put a lot of heart and soul into the book and had a real knack for zooming in on what was the essence of my story. My only regret is that I didn’t meet her sooner!" Cristy Elmendorp, Author of Where the Light Begins

"Diana is one of the most skilled and versatile editors I know. As a senior editor at GBG, her brain seemed to be always on fire with new and innovative ideas. She has a great ability to look at a manuscript from a bird's eye view and quickly determine what we can do to improve it. Her client communications are always professional, diplomatic, and kind, earning her rave reviews from many authors." Carrie Jones, PMP, Director of Production, Greenleaf Book Group

"Diana, it has been a sincere pleasure working with you! You went above and beyond all my expectations! I would not have been able to have completed this book without your guidance, encouragement, and help every step of the way. I am extremely grateful for YOU and all you have done for me and Exit Rich! I am your ghostwriter.

WHAT I DO: Create persuasive NONFICTION BOOK PROPOSALS. I wrote the proposal that sold the Paul Newman memoir to Knopf -- published in 2022. Going to market in 2023 with proposal for an iconic NYC restaurant. A book proposal is an excellent way to define that great book idea you know you have. Get organized. Pitch the idea before writing the entire manuscript.

I also help professional people expand career opportunities with NONFICTION BOOKS. Business, entertainment, "as told to" dramatic events, and memoirs.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU:  Without a ghostwriter many corporate leaders, politicians, athletes and other busy people would never write their autobiography. Or create a blog, write an editorial or a series of articles for publication. Some very powerful people believe in ghosts.  They just don’t admit it in public.

A published book is a powerful business card. "I am the author of ..." still opens doors and minds.

My ghostwriting services and keen interest in stories was sparked by my tenure as a reporter and editor for several newspapers, including the Los Angeles Daily News and Daily Hampshire Gazette. I bring those skills to the books, articles and screenplays I create for my clients.

Wow! Another great job. It’s funny and communicates the message really well. We can only begin by thanking you for all you have done for us! Your professional yet friendly personality makes working with you a pleasure."   Sergio Briceno, CEO, CaseCruzer

I wrote one from the POV of a lost dog! I write in UK English or US English depending on the requirements of the client.

If you are looking for a ghostwriter to churn out a lot of words in a short time, I am not your ghostwriter. Deadlines are important and I keep to them but I work with the client to ensure I have sufficient time to produce a quality novel, novella or screenplay.

You will find I am flexible and easy to get along with but I would say that, wouldn't I. So please see some of my clients' reviews below.

"Hire Fran! From taking on my project to completion Fran has worked with me, kept to my storyline, and using my voice throughout. Suggesting, helping and researching on my behalf to keep the plot true. What else can I say but a huge thankyou. Loved every minute of it!"

"Excellent!!! Highly appreciated, Francis is the best."

"Fran always does a great job!"

"Great as always!"

“Fran did a great job! I highly recommend his skills, expertise and politeness."

"Francis was a pleasure to work with . We'd love to work with him again."

"I had the privilege to work with Fran for over a two and a half months on a writing project. Throughout the whole process he was extremely professional and very available. He is also a talented writer and is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about history and WW2. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him."

"Francis is one of the best writers I've ever worked with. Quick, reliable, very high quality. If you need his services, you're not going to be disappointed!"

I am comfortable in writing in most genres including Regency Romance, Victorian Romance, Historical Romance, Historical  Action Adventure, Historical Thriller, Contemporary Romance, Contemporary Thriller, Contemporary Action Adventure, Mystery, Thriller and Suspense, Women's Fiction.

I'm a level-headed, experienced collaborator who specializes in memoirs and business books. I've written for everyone from high-level, competitive athletes to C-suite executives, along with design experts and regular people with remarkable stories.

I believe a great book happens when an author's unique stories and insights are told in a way that accounts for what their audience wants to know.

I've learned how to tell an interesting story in many different styles. I spent five years as an in-house book editor with John Wiley & Sons and Frommer's Travel Guides; I have extensive magazine experience on topics as diverse as local news, food & drink, and design & technology; and I spent more than a decade working as a writer with design teams at large tech firms like Google and Shopify.

More than anything, I relish the chance to make a story clear, relatable and memorable. Working with authors to deliver a book they're proud of is what makes the work fun.

Areas of expertise: UX and design, sports (particularly tennis and hockey), travel
Other interests: leadership, personal finance, memoir, health and fitness, outdoors/nature

I ghostwrite authority-building books for entrepreneurs, thought-leaders, coaches and therapists.

I also have an uncanny knack for capturing your voice when I write on your behalf, and do this by listening to you carefully when you speak, immersing myself in your professional world. One of my clients recently said: ‘My book sounds just like ME!’

The 18 years I previously spent in marketing, and my writing skills, are a powerful combination when it comes to your book. I make sure it achieves what it needs to for your business, basing it on the right strategy – the one that will boost your reputation – and delivering transformational value to your readers. You can be sure it will leave its footprint on your industry.

And if it’s a self-help book or memoir you’re after, I’m skilled at putting across your story and your teachings in a way that takes your readers with you. You’re leading them on a journey, so you want them to be a willing fellow traveller.

I’ve ghosted over 25 books on topics as diverse as marketing, phobias, recruitment, HR, service design, entrepreneurship, and IVF. They range from how-to guides, to thought-leadership books, to memoirs and autobiographies. Some have launched and stayed as bestsellers, and also been accepted by publishers such as Penguin Random House.

What’s more, many of my clients have asked me to ghostwrite their next book – that’s not bad going!

In addition to ghostwriting your whole book, I can also create your publishers’ proposal. My work as a judge at three Business Book Awards has given me a deep understanding of what publishers are looking for in a book.

If you want to understand my bottom-up philosophy on business book writing, you could take a look at my own book Your Business Your Book, which won the sales and marketing category at the Business Book Awards 2020. Or if you're a coach, therapist or trainer, my latest book How to Write a Self-Help Book enables you to avoid the mistakes that many personal development authors make.

Besides being a non-fiction and fiction author in my own right, I am a ghostwriter, book coach and book editor, based in Toronto, Canada and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Clients have told me I have a special skill around asking questions that make them think, really think, about their topic on a different level than they ever have. This results in a rich lode of information, which I then fashion into the book that will position the author in his or her chosen marketplace, tell their story for their children or for posterity, or share their worldwide travel adventures.

One of the things I love about working with authors is learning so much about so many subjects. I am a “people person”, easy to get along with — and fanatical about meeting deadlines!

Locations: Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Buenos Aires

Specialties: Business books, memoirs, adaptations from other media such as podcasts, how-to books

Years of Experience: 15

Books: Among the books I’ve ghostwritten or edited are: a series of books by a specialist consultant on how to grow an accounting firm; a book for an accountant teaching dentists how to run a dental practice as a business; a series of books for a professional speaker on workplace relationships and communication; a book adapted from a podcast featuring successful Canadian business people; a guide to the myths and truths of financial planning for a financial planner; a book on the luxury hotel industry for a hospitality consultant. I am currently working on a book on female hormones for an alternative medicine practitioner and a travel memoir for a digital nomad.

My own non-fiction titles include several books on communication in the workplace, a motivational book on perseverance and, most recently, “Rare Steaks, Red Wine, Hot Tango! — a rollicking memoir of Argentina”.

I am so lucky to be able to make my living as a writer. My proudest achievement had been ghostwriting the award-winning "Employee Benefits and the New Health Care Landscape" with serial healthcare entrepreneur, Alan Cohen – until joining the staff of Forbes Books as a professional ghostwriter. Now, I am thrilled to add the ground-breaking, “End of Abundance in Tech: How IT Leaders Can Find Efficiencies to Drive Business Value, by technology CEO Ben DeBow, to my list of editorial collaborations.

I also create content in the Mind & Spirit and Dating & Relationships genres. I edited the US version of "You are the Power: Choose to Create the Life You Desire," a memoir and guide to overcoming adversity by Access Consciousness life coach, Vladica Djordjevik. I was also a contributor (Giving Back and Flying Solo chapters) to the women's guide to midlife, "The 52 Weeks: Two Women and Their Quest to Get Unstuck," by Karen Amster-Yound and Pam Godwin.

My "day" job has included both full-time and consulting positions with corporate behemoths American Express, Willis Towers Watson, and others. I've also worked with a number of tech startups and appreciate the passion and drive of founders on the cusp of innovation.

My personal platform includes writing, editing, and blogging about travel, life, love, and the pursuit of publishing in NYC (although I am now living in Florida and have found some time to write about this experience from a New Yorker's eyes). I have had the privilege of working with motivational speaker Tony Robbins and biological anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher on numerous content projects, and have been published by Match.com as well as several lifestyle blogs.

I am adept at making people sound better than they think they do and expressing their hard-won insights in a simplified, engaging, and -- where appropriate -- comical manner (although I realize there was absolutely nothing funny about that last line). My personal blog can be found at https://jamikellywriter.tumblr.com/. Let's work together!
